R1100Rt Secdem Screen

Created 18/04/02

This page is intended as a guide to fitting a Secdem Screen to your R1100RT, Not a mammoth task, should only take 40mins.

After reading all the post on the internet about various screens I went for the Secdem screen from Moto Binns, It's substantially taller than the normal screen, which on the face of it is a very sporty style. The plan was to have a taller screen that in its lower more angled position would provide a smother air flow over me. And it works, I only have to lift the screen a further inch when I go over say 50mph to maintain that nice pocket of still (ish) air behind the screen, And because its not raised so much the screen mechanism seem to have an easier time supporting the screen against the gale! Yes, there is some distortion in the plastic, about 2 inches down from the top, the screen is slightly distorted over a 2 inch band across the screen, it's where the flip is moulded in to the plastic. personally I don't find this a problem It's well worth this minor problem to be able to sit in the peace and quiet.

Fitting is very straight forward so I won't insult you with a full rundown, The only problem area I found was the self tapping screw that holds the plastic uprights to the old screen. These had corroded to the point were a screw driver would not remove them. These were carefully turned out using a pair of pliers. Once out I slotted the head with a Hacksaw and used them again. The reason I did not replace them was I did not want to risk splitting the plastic forcing in another screw.

Secdem Screen Update

22/08/02

As an experiment I swapped back to the original short screen and had a ride out. Ok, the original short screen looks great and in town traffic you can lower it right down out of the way, but on the open road its very very noisy. On the other hand I was often conscious of having to peep over the top of the Secdem even when it was down. Hm, I decided to bite the bullet and shorten the Secdem by an inch. I had successfully done this many years ago to a Rickman fairing screen, so if it worked then...

Method

Cover the top 4 inches of screen with 2" masking tape then mark a line 1" down from the top then blending the line in nicely at the sides.

To cut the screen I chose a Coping saw. the blade is virtually all teeth and so long as its sharp cuts very well without sticking, and that's the important bit! Supporting the screen firmly the cut proceeded very well. when the top inch was cut off I used a belt sander to tidy up the raw edge then finished off by coming down the grades of wet& dry paper finishing with 1000 grit. This leaves the edge much as it left the factory ie not polished.

The screen was refitted to the bike and tried, I must say I found it a big improvement. I could lower the screen down out of the way then raise it to just right position to suite me. Most of the flip at the top has now gone but I do wonder if it serves any useful purpose. You might like to think it flips the air up over your helmet, but its just as likely to cause additional turbulence!

This is the now shorter screen with the BMW original laid on top, click on thumbs.

The original BMW screen measures 37cm from the top of the air duct to the top of the screen, the cut down Secdem now measures 47cm
