Scotland 2005

Saturday - A wee dram

Wed - Thu - Fri - Sat - Sun

Breakfast in the Sleeperzzz dinning compartment, we're having Heinz 'breakfast in a tin' on toast, yum, yum :)

Bill packing ready to go.

By 8.40 we we're on the road, at least the sun was shining this morning, but its pretty cold, in fact our host said it was down to 3c last night!

The view from Dornoch Firth bridge on the A9, pity it wasn't like this yesterday :(

Bill filming his epic, what a difference a bit of sun makes!

Many miles further south, The Mill tea room (multimap) at Blair Atholl for a much needed brew.

Don't tell the wife, but that Victoria Sponge was home made and pretty good.

13.40 And this was where we're heading, the Edradour Distillery in Pitlochry (multimap), Scotland smallest distillery making only 12 casks of whisky a week. Well, it would be a sin not to visit at least one wouldn't it?

Edradour has the smallest stills allowed by law, the first and smallest of the two is at the back and called the wash still, the sprit it produces is around 21% proof and called 'low wines' it condensed outside in submerged cooling coils, then it comes back inside to the larger spirit still for the second distilling.

From the spirit still it goes through this spirit safe where the heart of the run (the good stuff) is captured and put in to port wine casks to mature for the next 12 years.

Obviously, That's a very simplified explanation of how whiskey its made, if you want more try Making Malt Whiskey If you do end up visiting the Edradour distillery, the guided tour is free, as is a wee dram in the bar! I tried the Edradour Cream Liqueur as I'm very fond of Baileys, it was beautiful so I bought a bottle for Christmas.

From Edradour we headed on to our last nights accommodation at the Comrie Croft hostel (multimap) on the A85 between Comrie and Crieff, £11 per night

There are family rooms available, but we we're in with the commoners :)

For our evening meal Bill had a brilliant idea, an Indian takeaway! so a little later we rode to Abbi's Tandoori Restaurant in Crieff for a takeaway and took it back to Comrie Croft. When we got back an Australian couple were doing an indoor barbecue (or so it seemed from the fumes) in the kitchen, all the windows were open and you could cut the air with a knife, so our curry went virtual unnoticed :)

Today's route with 185 miles travelled
