Scotland 2005 Thursday - A very good day for ducks
I'm please to say I didn't need to leave my bunk during the night :) and by morning the worst of the wind and rain had subsided, but it was still pretty wet with very low cloud, Ah well, time for breakfast...
We had Breakfast in the very comfortable common room. There's a fully fitted kitchen adjoining and a cereal & toast breakfast can be pre-ordered for a few pounds at reception (as I had done). this is Bill setting up his video camera for his forth coming epic 'Scotland, the wrong way round'
By 9.00 we were on the road heading North on the A82, we stopped briefly to take this picture at the start of Glencoe, see what I mean about the low cloud, but it did looked brighter further down the road.
After getting thoroughly soaked riding through Glencoe we stopped to dry out in Ballachulish Tourist Information shop & cafe, the coffee and bun were very welcome, but we'd only travelled 25 miles! (multimap)
Ballachulish is an old slate mining village as you can see from these old but still in use slate huts at the side of the loch, looks just like parts of Wales.
The weather did improve and from Ballachulish we made 70 good miles to Glenshiel before we stopped for fuel and lunch, The scenery was brilliant, though the wet roads stopped us from fully enjoying the A87 which is famous for its curves and scenery.
12.50 Refuelling at the Shielshop petrol station, Its rare these days to find a pump attendant (multimap)
Lunch in the adjoining restaurant, best egg and chips I've had in a long time, recommended!
After lunch we rode on to Eilean Donan Castle by the side of Loch Alsh. Last time I was here we shot passed without stopping, at least this time we did manage to stop and take a decent picture (multimap)
Eilean Donan Castle car park, Bill chatting to two lads up from Manchester on the same mission as ourselves.
Just beyond Eilean Donan we made a right turn on to the A890, the road immediately narrowed, and from here onward it was often single track with passing places. Half a mile up the road on the right, we came across a viewpoint overlooking Loch Alsh.
15.16 Passing through a tiny village called Kinlochewe (multimap) looking for a cafe as usual, we spotted two Police officers with a speed gun, both gave me a friendly wave as we dawdled passed, I don't think they were having much luck today...
Loch Ewe with the village of Aultbea in the distance.
17.45 And finally, after travailing through some terrific countryside (and a little rain) we arrived at our second accommodation Sail Mhor Croft Hostel £10 per night, and very nice too! (multimap)
The view from Sail Mhor Croft, Little Loch Broom.
The common room and haven from the dreaded midges, shut that door!
Tonight's delicacy was Chilli con Carne (from a tin), rice (from a microwave sachet) and hot French bread from one of those part cooked bread packs, all purchased earlier at the Shielshop.
Tomorrow we were going over the top of Scotland at Durness, what the weather forecast was like, we didn't know, we had no telly and couldn't find a forecast on the radio, oh well, Bill had built in a couple of escape routes should the weather turn out poor, we would just have to wait and see what happens.
Today's route with 201 miles travelled
