Scotland 2002
It had rained during the night and it was a dull Morning. After breakfast we decided to visit Mull. The route we choose involved 4 ferry rides though the Corran ferry was very short, Lets start with a map of the proposed route.
Here's a picture of the gang getting ready to go. The forecast wasn't good so every one got togged up.
The run down to Corran ferry was uneventful and we drove straight on without waiting. This is Richard and Pato. N56.72163 W5.23530 (Multimap)
Our group was broken up leaving the ferry and when we caught up with the gang we found Pato picking his bike up. Somehow he had got caught up with a car & caravan, resulting in him dropping the bike on the grass verge. It all happened at low speed and all that was damaged was his rear indicator. This was soon taped up and we headed off to Strontian on the A861 looking for the Tourist Information (Multimap) to get the Ferry times.
For such a little place Strontian has a very good Tourist Information Office, We were told it would take about 90mins to drive to the ferry at Kilchoan. Its only 31 miles but the roads are very narrow and twisting, great! N56.69692 W6.10080 (Multimap)
Kid wanted to call in at Ardtoe on the way, he remembers going there as a youngster and wanted to have a look. John called the last part of the road to Ardtoe "The road to Hell" (or something!) I think he was referring to how interestingly the road twisted and bumped around, well it was O.K. on the Rt :-)
There really wasn't a great deal at Ardtoe after winding around it eventually stopped here. Judging from the looks we got from the locals, they don't get many visitors. N56.76902 W5.88309 (Multimap)
The weather was improving as we headed back via Acharacle were we found a great little Bakery. Everything was made on the premises, Hot pies bread & cakes- lovely. Another surprise here were the public toilets. Clean with hot water, soap and towels. It looks as if Acharacle is making a real effort for the tourists, well done. N56.74846 W5.80254 (Multimap)
We turned right at Salen and headed down the B8007 (Multimap) for the ferry at Kilchoan, The road follows the side of Loch Sunari and is a real treat, It winds and twists about like a good 'un and the views over the Loch are superb. Here are a few pictures. N56.71696 W5.77589 (Multimap)
You just can't beat scenery like this!
Eventually we made it to the ferry at Kilchoan with 20mins to wait before it came in. N56.68874 W6.09482 (Multimap)
No, that's not a ferry, surely it's a fishing boat!
Actually she's a car ferry named Rassay, capacity 6 cars with a crew of 3, 32 dead weight tons, launched 23/03/76 and the pride of the Caledonian MacBrayne fleet. Here's a link to there website so you can plan yourself a trip.
There was only one car to go with us and it was reversed on, then we piled on. The crossing takes about 40mins so we all settled down to enjoy the ride.
John settled down rather too much and fell asleep :-)
Graham & Patto.
The gang relaxing.
Landing at Tobermory. I got away first to take the picture. N56.62362 W6.06312 (Multimap)
First stop fuel, second stop Pub. N56.62311 W6.06514 (Multimap)
Tobermory is a really colourful place, If you want to see the Harbour Panorama click here it's 236Kb
From Tobermory we headed south on the A848 to get the Fishnish to Lochaline ferry, about 15m. This road varies from superb A road to a poor B road so be careful!
This one's the next size up! Called Loch Fyne, 36 cars 4 crew 190dwt built 1991. (I preferred the little one) N56.51436 W5.80971 (Multimap)
Pay up John!
She's got Kid this time!
Lounging on deck.
We disembarked at Lochaline and picked up the A884 for 19m then rejoined the A861 back to the Corran ferry and Fort William. N56.53682 W5.77506 (Multimap)
That's about it for Day 3 except to say we went to the Chip Shop in Fort William that evening. We dragged two tables together and had a very good (cheap) meal. Someone fell out with the waitress over a cup of tea and ended up having the correct change slapped on our table. Sometimes it's just better not to ask :-)
