Pyrenees 2006 Wednesday - The very best of days
Sun - Mon - Tue - Wed - Thu - Fri - Sat - Sun - Mon - Tue
09:30 Today we're heading for Tossa de Mar on the coast for a two night stop over. We'll continue on the N260, drop down the C1313, then continue east again on the Lv4241 & C154. Here's Gee and Dave S packing outside the Hotel Pessets, the storage space under the seat of the Dave's Bergman is huge, swallowing up all his luggage leaving the top box free for helmet and bits and pieces.
Riding out of Sort the strangest thing happened, I looked down and my GPS was re booting, "that's odd, it's never done that before?" then Dave radioed from the front saying his was re booting too! I looked around for aerials or microwave dishes but saw none, just a mile or so further on both re booted again, and that was it, it never happed again the whole trip. Is there something strange happening around Sort...?
10:01 On the N260 and 4 miles east of Coll del Canto (5660ft) we came to this viewing point near Guils Del Canto, high in the air a buzzard soared on the thermals. N42 20.484 E1 17.896 (map)
My apologies for the washed out image, I really do need a UV filter :(
Eleven miles further on we turned right on to C-14 then headed south 12 miles to join the L-401 east to Berga. Like all the roads I'd selected from Michelin maps for this trip, it had a green border, but we had no idea just how good this stretch would be.
11:08 The L-401, looking back the way we had come, the road pops out of a short tunnel bottom left of the picture, turns sharp left and continues round the valley climbing all the time. The scenery is stunning. N42 10.256 E1 24.682 (map)
11:16 Still higher up and looking back, from Dave S's mirror the road angles up behind the small peak in the middle of the picture, swings back round, then circles the peak and continues to the right. The picture above was taken just behind that small peak. N42 10.052 E1 24.093 (map)
11:20 The road's virtually deserted but for us, if you stop the engine while taking a picture, the silence is absolute. N42 07.415 E1 29.980 (map)
11:42 Passing through Sant Llorenc de Morunys we spotted the Bar Fonda Ca l'agusti on the left, we turned around and headed back for a cool drink in the shade. N42 08.048 E1 35.606 (map)
12:25 After leaving the cafe we rode on to Berga. Dropping out of the mountains Gee and I stopped to take this picture over looking the town with lake Panta de la Baells in the distance. N42.09751 E1.85369 (map)
14:39 The next exciting thing to happen was losing John on the new ring road around the little town of Hostalric :( The new road layout wasn't on the GPS's mapping and while I stopped to get my bearings, John disappeared down a slip road on what was probably the right road. As mistakes like this go, this one was quickly resolved, I rode back a mile and found John patiently waiting for me by a roundabout, sorted...
16:30 Having dropped out of the mountains, the last 60 miles in to Tossa de Mar were pretty boring and we were all looking forward to finding a hotel and getting cleaned up. John and Dave J went looking for somewhere suitable to stay while the rest of us celebrated completing the first leg of our journey at the Can Kalav Bar on the sea front. N41.71801 E2.93249
And this is the hotel John and Dave found us, only the poshest place in town, the Grand Hotel Reymar! However, the staff were very good, the porter showed us the huge locked garage and our bikes were safely stowed away.
Dave J heading back to the hotel garage.
Nice view, very smart bathroom and a mini bar/fridge. Nice, but expensive at €69 per night (£46)
The day ended with a designer meal in the hotel restaurant
which wasn't very filling, followed by
