Yet another cultural visit to Prague

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

12/03/04

So, here we are on our third visit to Prague... and its snowing!

Foggy, Ian, John, Andy and Patto

For this trip we relocated close to the old town square at the hotel U Zlateho Jelena*** (The Golden Stag). It saved walking up the hill to the U Brany ****, and it certainly saved my legs! The U Zlateho Jelena Hotel entrance is on the left, the big doors are the rear of a shop.

The poor weather certainly cut down on cultural exploration, in fact all we managed was a ride on the Funicular Railway to the top of Petrin Hill and a visit to the Petrin Observation Tower. Looking down the Funicular Railway, it's over 1000ft to the bottom

This is the Petrin Tower, it's a much smaller version of the Eiffel Tower and built in 1891. There are 299 steps to the top and only John made it there, the rest of us stayed in the cafe at the bottom :-)

Petrin Tower Cafe

The first day the weather was so bad we were forced to take shelter in a bar more usually frequented by the locals. Staropramen Beer is less than 30p/pint. Some time was spent here waiting for the blizzard outside to abate!

What do you mean, you can't see it snowing through the window?

Day two was slightly better allowing some time for shopping.

Patto, Andy and Ian.

If you're hungry there are numerous burger bars on both side of Wenceslas Square. Fried pressed meat or cheese is fine but the "toe nail" hot dogs left a bit to be desired!

I don't know when they shut because when we passed by at 5am and they were all still open and doing a good trade!

Despite the weather a good time was had. Thanks again Foggy, for arranging another good trip!

Accommodation was booked through the M. Long Agency, and flights through easyJet.

An excellent place for a traditional Czech meal is the U Radnickych restaurant, 508/9 Havelska, just a few streets away from the bottom of Wenceslas Square.

The biggest and best photographic shop I have ever been in is Fotoskoda again, just off Wenceslas Square. It's on two levels, upstairs is all new equipment and down stairs is used and collectable, don't take the wife!

And if you're looking for a good night out in Prague. Can I again recommend the Darling Cabaret Club, 32a Ve Smečkách, that's just off Wenceslas Square. It's still only 200Kč (£4.00) entry. and you will have a good time!
