Krakow 2005

 Page one - two

Our trip to Krakow started with a bang!

We'd been flying a holding pattern over Krakow for around 40 mins due to fog, when the pilot said "we'll try a landing"  We looked at each other with interest, "try" I said...

And try we did, The resulting bang when we 'touched down' stunned us all for a few seconds - then sporadic applause started up among the more appreciative travellers.

I checked the plane over when we got off, all the wheels were still there...

Steve from Tatra Travel picked us up and drove us to our hotel, the Wit Stwosz - very handily located just off the main square. Unfortunately, due to the late landing and fog bound roads we arrived too late for a restaurant meal, and ended up in a McDonald's. But never mind, we found some interesting bars to entertain us afterwards.

Next morning we woke early and went straight out for a wander around.

This is the Cloth Hall on Krakow's old town square, the other side of the square is currently being dug up by archaeologists.

Honest, I was minding my own business when this guy 'rode' over to me and tapped me on the head with his ball, then rode away again, mumbling 'thankyouverymuch' in to his false beard.

A corner of the Cloth Hall with the Basilica of the Virgin Mary's in the background.

A vendor's kiosk.

This is Krakow's Great Barbican, by the main gates.

And just inside the main gate, is this section of covered wall, it's very similar to the covered walling we found in Rothenburg, southern Germany.

After wandering around we found The Bull pub on the town square, you could be back in England, except it's very much cheaper here!

In the afternoon we intended visiting the Municipal Museum of Engineering, so called off back at the hotel to drop off shopping and call a taxi.

While we were out, the maid had tided our room, nice eh!

The girl on reception didn't know there was a museum of engineering, nether did the taxi driver, I showed them the address in the Krakow city guide '15 Sw. Wawrzynca street' and we were on our way.

It turned out the museum of engineering was both small, free and deserted. Here's Patto and John marvelling on the size of it.

Patto the tram driver.

John the scooter rider.

We manage to stretch our visit to nearly an hour before going out and catching a taxi back to the town square, I'm glad the journey only took 10 mins because that ancient Polonez taxi smelt a bit ripe!

On returning to the town centre, we dined at Roosters restaurant, I think it was around 14 Zlotych ( £2.40) for a huge burger, chips and salad, served by one of the Rooster girls. Highly recommended!

Much later, back at the hotel, we bought tickets for a coach trip to Auschwitz prison camp. We'd all heard so much about it, it would be wrong not to visit and see for ourselves. So, it was an early start tomorrow, the coach would arrive at 8.50...
