GS-911 to PC by Bluetooth Connecting the GS-911 to Laptop Notebook Computer by Bluetooth 05/09/2009
This write up is intended to help you set up a wireless connection between your GS-911 and laptop or desktop computer, a function not normally supported by the makers. But if you do have the Bluetooth version of the GS-911 you can connect and do your testing by Bluetooth, keeping your laptop or computer out of harms way on the workbench or in even in the house with no trailing wires.
Part one: Installing the Bluetooth adaptor on the computer. First, you need a Bluetooth Adapter for your computer. This is one of the cheapest I could find on ebay costing just a couple of pounds.
Plug the adapter in to a USB port on your computer and wait for XP to find it and load the drivers, this may take a short while. The drivers loaded should be the generic drivers supplied by Microsoft and according to Hexcode, these are the ones you want. When the drivers have been fully loaded your computer will tell you the device is ready to use.
Bottom right of your computer screen in the notifications area you should see the Bluetooth devices icon. Double click the Icon to open it.
To keep the Bluetooth icon in the notifications area, go to the 'Options' page and add a tick in the 'Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area' and click OK.
Part two: Making the Bluetooth connection to the GS-911 (Pairing) Go to the motorcycle and with the ignition switched off, plug the GS-911 in to the motorcycle's diagnostic connector, the GS-911 should switch its self on and after a short while a steady green LED should light showing it's powered up ok.
Back to the computer, we can now set up the Bluetooth connection to the GS-911.
If you have closed the Bluetooth devices pop up, you can reopen it by double clicking the Bluetooth devices icon in the notifications area, bottom right of the computer screen.
On the 'Devices' page click 'Add'
The wizard will start, place a tick in 'My device is set up and ready to be found' tick box and click Next.
The wizard will now search for Bluetooth devices.
After a while, and providing it's in range, your GS-911 should be found and shown as below. It might also find the guy next doors mobile phone and anything else Bluetooth in range, so wait for the GS-911 to appear, highlight it, and click Next.
Now you need to type in the passkey for the GS-911, select the 'Use the passkey found in the documentation' radio button and enter four zeros in the adjoining field. Click Next.
Windows will now connect with the GS-911 and install the device. Click Next.
Next the COM port window will appear, make a note of the Outgoing COM port number (in this case - COM3) then click Finish.
Part three: Software setup Install the GS-911 software to your Laptop / PC. Once installed run the software. Once it's running 'Setup' should pop up, if it doesn't, it's under Tools > Setup. Select the COM port radio button and set the COM port to the Outgoing COM port number you noted in the earlier step.
Now click 'Test Interface'
If all's well the software will communicate with the GS-911 via Bluetooth and the 'GS911 Interface Information' will pop up proving communications are good and you've successfully completed pairing. Click OK. (Note: the LED on the GS-911 flash alternating red/blue when it's communicating via Bluetooth).
Part four: You're all set to go! From here you can carry on as if your laptop / PC is connected to the GS-911 by USB cable, the only thing you can't do is upgrade the GS-911's firmware via Bluetooth, you must use a USB cable for that (according to HEXcode).
Success! my ancient laptop on the workbench connected by Bluetooth to the GS-911
Notes: 1. This page assumes you have the Bluetooth version of the GS-911 and your computer is running Microsoft XP with Service Pack 2 installed.
2. I first tried to use the 'Incoming port' number but it locked the software up when tried, using the 'Outgoing port' number worked fine.
3. Hex's notes on setting up a computer to GS-911 Bluetooth connection
4. If your having problems with the Bluetooth adaptor drivers this is what the generic drivers should look like when correctly installed.
To view them go to: Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager. They are only shown in Device Manager when the Bluetooth adaptor is plugged in.
5. Lastly, I'm sorry, but I can't realistically provide technical support for this procedure. For me this worked first time with no problems on two computers. I didn't have any other Bluetooth drivers installed on either computer to confuse the setup and XP's own generic Bluetooth drivers worked just fine.
Good luck!
