Euro Ramble 2004 Wednesday - Speed testing Mon - Tue - Wed - Thu - Fri - Sat - Sun - Mon
Breakfast was excellent at the Zur Post and put us all in the right frame of mind for a good day's ride. Outside it was quite misty, which back in the UK could mean a hot day later on.
We really needed to knock some miles off our today, and get down closer to the Austrian border for a visit to Neuschwanstein Castle the next day. Neuschwanstein being around 400 miles away.
The mist did burn off, and by lunchtime it had really started to get warm!
During the afternoon Ian decided to see just how fast the 'Blade would go on a deserted stretch of autobahn. We were travelling at around 80mph as Ian accelerated away. He must have been a quarter of a mile ahead when the rain cover from his tail pack completely shredded and flew off, taking his rain trousers with it. What happened to the cover I don't know, but Patto and I stopped to recover the trousers. So how fast will it go? Later on when giving Ian back his trousers he said it would only do 170mph!
Vines basking in the summer sun at the side of a service area.
A useful feature at German filling stations is the windscreen cleaning mop, complete with soapy water, which is great for removing dead flies from the whole bike!
I'd like to say the GPS routed us perfectly through the day, but far from it. in one place we found ourselves cruising down a motorway that wasn't on the GPS base map at all, which would be understandable if the road was a new one, but this one had been here for quite some time. It's all very odd, because two years ago I had no problems with the base mapping on the older Garmin III+ travelling through France.
We ended the day in Memmimgen, just off the A8. We rode around a while and tried a few places, but no luck. Dave went through to a beer garden and asked the staff if there was anywhere nearby we might try. Coming out ten minutes later he said someone was coming to pick us up, well done Dave! Five minutes later a guy on a bicycle did arrive and took us back to the Schwabenhof Gasthof: great!
We suspected the place had just closed, end of season, so we were lucky to be taken in. We had two very good connecting rooms and a large bathroom for around €30 (£20) each including breakfast, with our bikes securely locked in the garages under our room.
Just before going out, Patto found his digicam had failed. It still seemed to take pictures, but there was nothing on them, so we were down to two cameras now, Dave's and mine. After cleaning up, we went back to the beer garden and had a great evening under the trees, drinking beer and eating red hot chilli pizza, chicken and pommes frites (chips).
Below is the day's route. We had travelled around 350 miles and were around 50 miles from Neuschwanstein.
Tomorrow should prove to be an interesting day!
