Euro Ramble 2004

Monday - The big trip

Mon - Tue - Wed - Thu - Fri - Sat - Sun - Mon

As P&O still owed us a complimentary ferry trip from Hull to Zeebrugge after the Norsea engine room fire back in 2002 (see Swiss Alps 2002), So we decided to use the passes for a September trip to Europe to see the sights before winter set in.

The riders were:

  • Ian:     Honda 900 Fireblade

  • Dave: Yamaha T-max

  • Patto: R1100RT

  • Ebbo: R1100RT

We met up Monday afternoon at Squires Biker Cafe, near Shurburn, Leeds. It was a dull and damp meeting. After a mug of frothy coffee to warm us up we joined the A1 south and headed for Hull via the M62.

52 miles later we arrived at P&O Hull and joined a slow moving queue to be processed. At least it gave us time to get organised. Passports and booking numbers were found and after passing through, we were quickly ushered aboard.

P&O still only provide lengths of dirty blue rope to fasten the bikes down, so I'd invested in a Motrax handlebar strap. Fixing the bike down only takes a few minutes and the result is very secure. The carrier-bag is my overnight bag: shoes, trousers and toothbrush!

The cabin was much better than the DFDS economy cabin on the Norway trip.

The food at the evening buffet was better, too. For £15, you can eat as much as you can like. My wife would say Yorkshire Puddings and chips don't go together, but they do on one of our trips!

The first day's map, just 50 miles by motorway from Squires Cafe to P&O Hull

The Captain announced there would be a gale-force wind blowing tonight, but one blowing straight onto the stern of the ship, meaning we could still have a smooth journey. He turned out to be right, and after a few beers we all slept well!
