"Big Mak" Explorer Airbag

A tankbag for BMW motorcycles

30 March 2004

This is the Big Mak Explorer TC Airbag, It's made for BMW motorcycles by Big Mak Accessories in the USA. Over the years I've owned quite a few tank bags, but this is by far the best, read on for the full low down.

Main design features:

  • It mounts via a sub frame so it can't scratch your paint.

  • The bag is quick to fit and remove from the sub frame.

  • It flips up to allow easy refuelling.

This picture shows the Big Mak flipped up and the fuel filler cap raised ready for refuelling, easy!

The tankbag slips on to this plastic platter and is secured by a Velcro tab passed under the hinge. You can see the tab in the picture above. Meaning the next time you want to stop at a café, you don't need to worry about security, just slip the bag off, and take it with you.

The Big Mak TC with the Stealth / Explorer map case installed. It's double sided and fitted on a swivel toggle at the front with Velcro along the sides to hold it in place. The map window measures 24 x 17cm (9½ x 6¾ inch) for me, that's perfect for vector maps as you can just see in the picture below.

Additional Design features:

  • Elasticated mesh pockets on both sides.

  • The main zip is huge and fitted with toggles.

  • A broad elastic flap covers the zip and allows easy access.

  • Internally there's a fitted pouch for the shoulder strap that can also accommodate a mobile phone.

A great deal of thought has gone in to designing this tankbag. It completely abandons traditional design and replaces zippers, clips and elastic straps with a sub frame that's securely screwed to the fuel tank filler. The build quality is excellent throughout, the sub frame in particular is very well made, using nylon plugs as hinges for the platter.

The TC is one of a range of Airbags manufactured by Big Mak Accessories in the USA, mine was supplied by Cycle Gadgets, look under BMW gadgets.
