Swiss Alps 2002

Day1 - Day2 - Day3 - Day4 - Day5 - Day6 - Day7

The weather was poor with heavy cloud today but we were determined to have a run around the passes after calling in on kid, So we headed down the mountain to Altdorf Hospital via the old road.

On the way down we stopped for a photo. While we were there an American guy stopped (the guy with the shades) He had bought a R1150GS in Germany but couldn't get the heated grips to work. We checked it over, all the electrical gear was present and the fuse was fine but without a meter we could do no more. He was travelling to southern Italy that day for a wedding and had intended going over the top. We told him the top was completely in cloud and pretty cold, In view of the distance he had to go we recommended he go through the St Gotthard tunnel.

After seeing kid was ok we headed back up to Wassen for the turning to the Sustenpass. About a mile passed Amsteg Patto's bike stopped with a very loud backfire. We checked the plugs, there was a spark and there was fuel in the tank. We turned around and coasted back down the hill to Amsteg Fire station were Patto called the AA for assistance.

It must have taken near 2 hours for the break down guy to appear, When he did turn up at least he had a proper bike trailer and after looking briefly at the bike it was rolled on to the trailer.

20 minutes later we were at back at the Yamaha dealers, Gisler Motos, Shattdorf. The bike was unloaded and put on one of the ramps, They quickly had it in bits but couldn't find the problem, there was sparks, fuel & compression but it would not fire up.

They battled on half the afternoon talking by phone with a BMW dealers but by 5 O'clock we had run out of time. We made arrangements to contact them the next day then Patto climbed on the back of my R1100RT and I took him back up the mountain to Andermatt. There was nothing for it but to go to the pub....
